The Town of Manteigas
Known as the Heart of Serra da Estrela, Manteigas is a town in the district of Guarda, located in the middle of the Zêzere Glacier Valley. Its urban area includes the parishes of Santa Maria and São Pedro, surrounded by a unique natural landscape.
In Manteigas, you can enjoy close contact with nature. The Serra da Estrela Natural Park, a scenery that always accompanies visitors to the town, is the stage for a variety of obligatory stops. From the Faias de São Lourenço - an extensive forest, (re)known for its bright colours, which change according to the seasons - to the Covão d'Ametade, with its glacial origins - crossed by the River Zêzere and the starting point for various trails - to the Cântaros and viewpoints, to landmarks such as the Poço do Inferno, a waterfall over 10 metres high. From the curious to the more adventurous, there are trails and discoveries for any nature lover.

In addition to the natural landscape, Manteigas stands out for the historical character of its streets and the friendliness of its inhabitants. Walking through the town allows you to observe the religious heritage built in the various churches and chapels, and to visit the local shops that eternalise the traditions and customs of the region.
Its culture is represented by burel, a fabric that dates back to ancient stories about the shepherds of Serra da Estrela; stories that are still so present that you can experience them first-hand when you visit the town's factories.
It is also represented by traditional food. From Serra da Estrela cheese to pastéis de feijoca (runner bean pastries), from esquecidos biscuits to bolo de rosas (‘rose cake’), from rye bread to chouriça (smoked pork sausage) and farinheira (flour and pork sausage) - Manteigas offers a wide variety of typical restaurants and cafés, ideal for enjoying good flavours in an even better moment of conviviality and/or relaxation.

Visit Manteigas for a cosy stay surrounded by unforgettable landscapes and experiences.
